Debaters can explore several subtopics within this broader debate, such as:

  1. The balance between public safety and individual privacy rights in the context of AI-powered surveillance.
  2. The potential for abuse and misuse of AI surveillance systems by governments, law enforcement agencies, or private entities.
  3. The implications of facial recognition technology and its impact on anonymity and personal identity.
  4. The role of transparency and accountability in the development and deployment of AI surveillance systems.
  5. The importance of regulations and legal frameworks to ensure responsible and ethical use of AI-powered surveillance.

Step 1: Group Formation

Group A and Group B. Each group should consist of individuals who will present arguments and counterarguments for their respective positions.

Step 2: Research

You will have 10 minutes to conduct research on the chosen topic. Gather information, statistics, examples, and expert opinions to support your arguments. You should also explore the ethical, social, and practical implications related to AI-powered surveillance.

Step 3: Argument Preparation

5 minutes to formulate the main arguments. Each group should identify key points, evidence, and examples to support their position. Think critically and anticipate counterarguments from the opposing group.

Step 4: Speaker Assignment

Select a few participants to be your speakers. These individuals will present the main arguments during the debate.

Debate Structure:

  1. Opening Statements: Start the debate with the opening statements from both groups. Each group should present a concise summary of their main arguments and outline the points they will address during the debate. (3 minutes each)
  2. Argument Presentation: Allow each group to take turns presenting their arguments. Each speaker should present their points clearly, provide supporting evidence, and articulate the reasoning behind their position. Be respectful. 5 minutes each group.
  3. Cross-Examination: After each speaker presents their arguments, allow time for cross-examination. This is an opportunity for members of the opposing group to ask questions, challenge the arguments, and seek clarifications. The speakers should respond thoughtfully and defend their positions. (5 minutes to get prepared and 3 minutes each to present)
  4. Rebuttal and Counterarguments: Following the cross-examination, give each group an opportunity to offer rebuttals and counterarguments. They can address the points raised by the opposing group and present additional evidence to reinforce their position. 2 minutes each
  5. Closing Statements: Conclude the debate with closing statements from both groups. Each group should summarize their main arguments, reiterate their key points, and make a compelling case for their position. Encourage them to end on a strong and persuasive note. 2 minutes each
